Stationary Sources of Air Pollution and Tree Canopy Cover in Syracuse, NY

Posted: September 13, 2013    /   Created: May 24, 2013

This map shows stationary sources of air pollution overlaid on canopy cover and planted-to-date trees. The majority of air pollution point sources are located along US and State Highways and have very little canopy coverage within a quarter mile of them. These maps show areas that could benefit from having trees planted as a natural sink for carbon and other environmentally damaging elements. In addition, studies have shown that trees can help define the roadway edge, increase driver perceptions of safety, and reduce driving speeds (Naderi, Kweon, & Maghlal, 2008). Of course this would not be
applicable in situations such as the raised I-81 overpass, but the major state roads lined in orange could potentially benefit.
