Student Profile

Erin Carhart

After learning of this program through one of my professors in the Public Affairs Department, I began working with Syracuse Community Geography in the fall of 2012. SCG sets itself apart from other research programs because of its firm approach in community based research. As a lifelong resident of Onondaga County, I have always felt deeply connected to this community and wanted an experience that would bridge academia to the lived experiences of Central New York community members. Although my traditional studies are not in the geography field, I believe I bring a passionate perspective to this work because of my commitment to social change. In the past, I have worked on several projects including the Onondaga Citizens League Refugee Study and projects partnering with the Central New York Community Foundation. Working at Syracuse Community Geography has been and continues to be a tremendous hands on learning experience.

2015 Update: I currently work for Planned Parenthood Federation of America as their National Campus Organizer in Washington, DC. My work ranges from youth organizing with high school students to college campuses organizing, to young professionals in the progressive movement.
