In Spring 2026, Syracuse Community Geography (SCG) partnered with Syracuse Grows to host a community workshop and presentation on urban soil health for community gardeners and urban growers. The goal of the workshop was to educate gardeners about soil contaminants in garden spaces and safe gardening practices. SCG interns collected 25 soil samples from 9 different community gardens to test at the workshop. At the workshop, urban growers learned to test soil and interpret soil test results from Dr. Perl Egendorf, a soil scientist from Pace University. Using an XRF Spectrometer, soils were tested for six heavy metals (lead, zinc, arsenic, nickel, chromium, and copper). Syracuse Grows is a grassroots network that cultivates food justice through advocacy, education, and resources in support of urban food production.
