  • Public Participation in Urban Projects

    In Rotterdam, Netherlands, the city government has been funding resident supported projects that are defining the city’s landscape. Each year, the government gives between 2-4 million euros to a project as part of its City Initiative. The funded project this year was a public ice-skating rink, however bids for next years funds include a plan to turn food waste into biogas and electricity and another to provide job opportunities for disadvantaged youth.   • Op-Ed: How to Grow San Diego’s Food Security from the Grassroots

    An interesting piece about a group of refugees turned urban farmers. The Bahati Mamas grow organic produce in their San Diego community farm and distribute it to farmers markets and restaurants in the area. Their goal is not to turn a profit, rather the group wants to improve food access in their neighborhood, which has about half the amount of grocery stores needed to serve its population.   • Why Houston Is Changing Its Alcohol-Sales Law to Help Food Deserts

    The city of Houston, TX recently changed its alcohol sale law to allow liquor to be sales within 300 ft of churches, public schools, and hospitals, in an effort to help solve its food desert problem. This change will apply exclusively to supermarkets, keeping bars and liquor stores away from those facilities. Check out some Houston food desert maps and read more about this story here.
