Exemplifying open governance and participatory action, Boston’s “Youth Lead Change” project engaged youth in the first ever participatory budgeting process in a U.S. city. Young Bostonians, ages 12-25 had a hand in designing the process, were made aware of, and discussed, spending priorities and current projects, and finally cast their votes to determine which proposed community development projects (everything from improving parks to creating art spaces) they felt should receive some share of the city’s $1 million of public capital.
